We've all heard that you should drink a minimum of 8 glasses of water a day, but most people fall way short of this simple goal. Research shows that up to 75% of the population is living in a state of dehydration. This brings to question, why is drinking water so important?

Drinking an adequate amount of water helps rid the body of toxins and buildup. It helps aid in digestion and is crucial in ensuring adequate perfusion, absorption and excretion within the body. Water is essential to bringing vital nutrients to our cells through the circulatory system, which keeps our organs functioning.

What factors does drinking enough water have on your skin? The body is made up of 60% water and the skin, being the largest organ of the body, is no exception. When the skin doesn't get sufficient water, it becomes dry, tight, flaky and more prone to wrinkling. Water helps maintain proper skin moisture and delivers essential nutrients to the cells, which replenishes the tissues and increases its elasticity. When skin is hydrated it is plump and thus delays the onset of fine lines and wrinkles. Hydrated skin is soft, glistens, and has an enhanced complexion.

Dehydrated skin commonly produces more oil to try and compensate for the lack of moisture. This lack of moisture causes dry patches, irritation, oily skin, and the thickening of sebum. When the body over produces thick sebum, it leads to our worst nightmare, blemishes. Consuming enough water increases metabolic rate and aids the digestive system in flushing out acids and toxins from your body - in return, giving you healthy, glowing skin. This can also help combat disorders like eczema, acne, psoriasis and premature aging. For problem areas, like the eyes, salt accumulates here causing water retention, puffiness, and dark circles. If you drink a sufficient amout of water during the day it will help flush out the excess salt.

Drinking enough water has a profound effect on the body, it helps regulate body temperature, aids in digestion, and helps the kidneys clean out wastes. Proper hydration increases concentration, fights fatigue, and leads to healthier looking skin. Drinking 2-3 litre of clean water a day can change the way that your body functions, so go get it!
